Uniqueness and diversity
Say "diversity" and immediately people think of racial, ethnic or other forms of classification of people. Diversity can also on what we think and how we think to refer. Does your board the necessary diversity for a sustainable organization have to create?
It is hard to have a diverse board. In a perfect world it should have one representative from each group involved with the organization. For a church school, means that someone from each of the ethnic groups in theStudents, single parent, someone from the community as a whole, a student and a teacher. There is also a need for a financially talented person who views the high-quality donor and someone from the community of volunteers, referral sources are represented and advocated. If the school is a service of the local church, it is also important to have a representative of the church. It would also require), a mixture of skills (finance, marketing, leadership, fundraising, etc..
Itquickly becomes clear that a truly diverse board is too large to be manageable. What is the alternative?
Each school has defined the alternative, to a certain number of people. The last school board I served on nine people on it. However, the number is, it is rare, the correct number. There is usually one or several points of view to overlook that if they have a choice.
One of the reasons for a different board, because it is important to be as comprehensive aspossible. Since helps broaden and diversify support for inclusive discussion. An open discussion usually produces a wider variety of decision overlooked with fewer opportunities and challenges.
There is broad support, testing of other possibilities, and the recognition of the challenges that will help the sustainable decisions and organizations. This is where diverse ideas becomes more important.
But let us think about the Christian school. Let us assume that the board is very diversewith one exception. The exception is that everyone is on the board of the same religious community. If half of the students is either unchurched or from a different name, it is to be for the Board in its decision-making process inclusive difficult. Without integrative thinking, there is a risk. You may enroll may suffer decline and the health of the school.
The need to honor certain guidelines makes it difficult to involve an outsider in the decision process. SimultaneouslyTime to each denomination structures themselves open to outsiders. Without new members, the name will wither and die.
The solution is to "outsiders" to serve on board committees to invite. This gives them a voice, without giving them a voice. It provides the board with critical input. It creates a healthy dialogue, understanding and accommodation without conflict or dilution of the main principles.
Next step:
Each year, the required diversity for the decision(Board), Input (Committee) and implementation levels (volunteers and staff).
Recruit appropriate individuals to establish and ensure processes, their voices are heard.
Promote diversity of thought, because in the heart of the assumption that the different views diversity of experience and background to the bring table.Margaret Wheatley is with the statement, "If we have unique and varied opportunities to fail to promote the things is credited we destroy the entire system the ability to adapt. "OurExperience confirmed her thoughts.
Mission Enablers usually notice a lack of diversity in thought and composition at all levels to fight organizations. Struggling to keep organizations are usually less than necessary to adaptive pace with our rapidly developing society. In other words, if your organization is struggling with a problem, or at a higher level, struggling to write the diversity of thought. A wide diversity in the composition and just help you with the latest trouble? Willbring the fresh perspective for a sustainable solution?
Cultural, ethnic and other forms of diversity are generally good in today's organizations. There is always room for improvement, but our facilities are ready. Diversity of thought and ways of thinking need more attention.
Your Board has a unique mix of individuals. Do they have the diversity of thought that your organization is a broad appeal in the community and attracts people (supporters,Lawyers, clients, volunteers, etc.)?
Make the diversity of thought and the composition of your unique strength.
